RTÜK’s Supervisory Approach in Broadcasting
Since the last quarter of 2024, the public announcements and press releases issued by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (“RTÜK”) suggest a transformation in the regulatory perspective on broadcasting, increasingly extending toward editorial influence.
RTÜK’s remarks regarding the use of archive footage, the tone of main news broadcasts, and the editorial construction of daytime programming, although formally grounded in Law on the Establishment of Radio and Television Enterprises and Their Media Services numbered 6112, raise significant concerns from the perspective of freedom of expression and editorial independence.
