Latest Developments in Media Landscape


We are pleased to share with you the latest developments in Turkey's media landscape. Please find below the our brief note on the decisions and announcements published by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (“RTUK”) this week.
 
  • 19.12.2023 - Principle Decision of RTUK:
Considering the power of mass media to influence society, RTUK has taken a principal decision that sports programs should avoid expressions that increase the tension between fans, incite violence, and are contrary to the spirit of sports and that all kinds of sanctions, including license revocation under Law No. 6112, may be applied in the event that sports broadcasts act otherwise. This principle decision was taken as a result of the cooperation between the Turkish Football Federation and RTUK.
 
  • 18.12.2023 - Annual Usage Fees Coefficient:
Within the scope of the decision numbered 1 taken at the meeting of the Supreme Council dated December 15, 2023, and numbered 2023/49, the coefficient for television channel and radio frequency annual usage fees to be collected from radio and/or television organizations broadcasting in terrestrial media was determined as 4.573499.
 
  • 18.12.2023 - Announcement to Media Service Providers Broadcasting in Earthquake Zones:
On February 6, 2023, following the earthquake disaster that affected 11 primary cities, it was decided to postpone the financial obligations of media service providers broadcasting in earthquake zones for 1 year. In the decision numbered 4 of the Supreme Council dated March 15, 2023, and numbered 2023/11, it has been decided that for the commercial communication income declarations of the media service providers broadcasting in the earthquake zone for the year 2023, "the obligation to submit the commercial communication income declaration for the period of 2023 will be postponed until January 31, 2024 and they will declare their 12-month commercial communication income for the period of 2023 in a single declaration to be prepared by the Supreme Council". Pursuant to this decision, a single declaration document was prepared by the Supreme Council in order for the relevant broadcasting companies to declare the 12-month commercial communication revenues for the year 2023, and an announcement was made regarding how the broadcasting organizations broadcasting in the earthquake zone can access this declaration document and that they must declare the said declaration to the Supreme Council until January 31, 2024.
